Here's a few pointers on what to do and what not to do when visiting one of the CIS countries;
1. Always speak politely and in a courteous manner.
2. Always follow the concept of "other people" in your social behaviour and actions. Be considerate towards
other people around you and do not break queues.
3. Remove your shoes at the door before you go any further into someone's home. Because of this you
should also have extra slippers to offer people when they come to your home.
4. It is customary to bring a gift if you are invited to someone's home. It doesn't have to be much but flowers,
candy, bread, anything will do. Be aware that they will bring you a gift when they come to your home.
5. Always be prepared to offer people something to drink and eat when they come to visit. Have on hand tea,
and bread at the very least to entertain guests who drop by. You must also be aware that you will be offered

6. Learn some of the local language even if you only manage a few words try to learn. Learn at least how to
say; hello, goodbye, how are you, I'm fine, numbers 1-10, thank you, sorry, please. If you can master just that
list you will find yourself on your way to making friends.
7. Ask permission before taking a photo of someone (or if its children, ask their parent).
8. If someone asks for a cigarette lighter, please light it for them. This is a common gesture.
9. Give extra respect to ladies and elderly people.
10. Throw garbage in dustbins only. Carry wrappers or empty cigarette packets until you find a bin to trash it.
11. Respect the laws of the land. There are penalties for breaking rules any tour operators can't help much.
12. It is important to keep the coaches clean. Drivers do not allow eating, drinking and smoking in the
coaches.
Don't
1. Do not light a cigarette until you've made sure smoking is allowed there. Smoking zones at public places
usually have dustbins containing cigarette butts.
2. Don't admire things too much in someone's home; the custom is if you admire or comment on something,
they will feel compelled to give you that item.
3. It is rude in any culture to make fun of someone or make fun of their country, appearance or food choices.
You may not like a food choice but you can always find a polite way of refusing
4. Do not try to be too loud in public even if those around you are being loud.
5. When you're looking for a taxi don't wave your hand, rather put out your hand and slowly drop your wrist
to indicate you want a ride.
6. You're expected to carry your passport at all times but be careful not to lose it, else you'd be in serious
problems.
Excellent, probably the best yet.
